Where are the rapper turned screenwriters?
Rap music has spawned many great storytellers over the years from many different rappers. Also over the past few years there have been many rappers turned actors. In varying degrees of success from Tupac, DMX, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, 50 Cent, Common and etc. So that got me thinking why aren’t there more rappers turned screenwriters.
Since a lot of rap is someone telling a story and a few have been able to help you paint a picture as if was a movie. For example imagine Nas’s Rewind as feature length or short film. Or even J Cole has taken many different views of different people on his songs. There has also been many other songs that can developed into screenplays. Maybe it is time for more rappers to take risks into taking their writing into different mediums.
If more rappers decided to write more screenplays maybe we will be able to see more variety of African Americans on screen. Which can help get us into different positions and expose new avenues of career possibilities other just being a rapper
